Over the past year or two, I have begun to acquire an appreciation for old Italian music. It sure is a nice refreshing change and is not only romantic and soothing, but can also be funny as well. For example, Lou Monte’s “Who Stole My Provolone“, “Lazy Mary” and “Pepino The Italian Mouse” are hilarious. Dean Martin’s “Hey Mambo” has some funny parts too.
And then there are some songs which I absolutely love…
- Dean Martin: Besame Mucho, Bona Sera, Come Back To Sorrento, Volare, and Daddy’s Little Girl
- Emilio Pericoli: Amore Scusami
- Frank Sinatra: My Way (of course), That’s Amore, Fly Me To The Moon
- Jerry Vale: Innamorata
- Tony Bennett: It Had To Be You, Stranger In Paradise, I Left My Heart In San Francisco, Make Someone Happy
There’s more, but I’m not to list every song I like… The more I listen, the more I like it. Even though some of the songs are 100% in Italian and I have no idea what they are singing, the music still speaks to me. I feel like I have discovered a whole new world of music.
Now if I could just figure out who sings that “What’s a matter you, you got a no respect” song, I’d be set! Anyone know? I bet my Uncle Chuck knows… In fact, I specifically remember that song from when I was little over his house in Levittown.

I know most of the people that I know can appreciate this! This is a video from Weird Al. I love the buzzwords he uses in the video!

What’s wrong with me? Well, I was in the mood to hear the song ‘Making Love Out Of Nothing At All’, which was actually written by Jim Steinman, so it’s actually good. Unless you point out the fact to me that he also wrote the Bonnie Tyler song ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’. But I guess when you consider the other songs he has written for Meat Loaf, it overshadows the Bonnie Tyler thing…

Picking up from one of my other blogs “The Music Speaks To Me“, I figured that I would list some of the music who describes who I am and what I feel. Sometimes music is the best way to describe and understand feelings. I have gone through many transformations in my life, and these are some of the songs that I can relate to. I will list the song, and then post a line or two about its significance. Regardless of whether or not you like my choices of songs, the point is not that of musical taste. Rather the ability to describe who I am, the things that I have felt, etc… If you do not know the lyrics, I have provided a link to them so you can read them. I have added comments to some of the songs. The others are self-explanatory by reading and analyzing the lyrics. These songs are in no particular order… This is not a timeline of my life. Ever since I was a young boy, I have enjoyed listening to music to help me understand my emotions. The thing I have always found about music is that there is somebody out there who understands what you are going through, and when they put it into music, it is a way to help emotionalize these feelings into something greater than words. When I was a teenager, many of the songs that appealed to me were those of partying, good times and relationships. Now, you know that thoughts of girls and melodrama are most of the thoughts that occupy a teenager’s mind. And certainly, I was no different.
Whether I was listening to ‘Nothing But A Good Time‘ by Poison, or ‘Crying In The Rain‘ by Whitesnake, these songs helped me cope in my somewhat complex teenage life. I also had my deeper music that I listened to, like Cat Stevens or Meat Loaf. When I needed to self-punish myself by listening to a song about a failed relationship, or I had a fight with my parents, or whatever, the music was always there, and it spoke to me. Continue Reading…
